Marshall Miller was appointed the first captain of fire company No. 2, the "colored" fire house. appointed by Mayor Beard in May 1903. His appointment meet with opposition by Aldermen Schroeder, Schultz and Frankberger.

Miller was born Sept, 15, 1861 in Richmond, VA. He came to Vermilion County, L about 1880. He was a barber and his shop was on the corner of Main and Hazel, he worked with William Vance and Robert Bass. William Vance had removed to Danville from Springfield, IL were he worked for Abraham Lincoln.

Miller was married and had several children. He was a musican and played in the colored band.
