Ray Hines

Ray Hines is a community member who lived on Park Street from 1929 until about 1953. He witnessed a great deal of the changes that would transform the Park Street of the early 20th century into the Park Street on which the mural, in 1978, was painted. Even as a man who is now a little over eighty, Mr. Hines' memory is impeccable and, in his interview, he paints with his words powerful and compelling narratives of times and people past. He discusses the families who once lived on Park St., certain traditions that they participated in on Park St., and thoroughly captures the overall feeling of Park St. from the 1930s to the 1950s. In this interview, Mr. Hines provides a rich variety of testimonies and experiences that allow for a greater and more nuanced understanding of Park St. and both its history and legacy.
