Born in Chambersburg, Orange County, IN, April 4, 1861. He received his education in the public school s of Indiana. He was appointed fireman by Mayor John Lewman May 3, 1905. During his short service as fireman he was faithful in his duties and reconfigured as a competent man. He was a well known among the colored people of th city.
In 1880 he moved from his boyhood home to Rockville, IN where he was the foreman of a livery, feed abd sake barn. In 1885, he moved to Newport, AK, where he operated a stave and beading factory, under the name of Chavis Bros.. Two years later he came to Danville and was employed as a bus and baggage driver for 18 years before being appointed a fireman.
